A good and colourful miniature portrait of a young officer wearing a scarlet tunic with a black collar with gold lace and white chemise. He wears the Waterloo Medal pinned to the left breast. His hair is worn in the fashionable style "a la Brutus".
Watercolour in an oval gold frame, the reverse with neatly plaited hair. Signed Stump to the obverse.

STUMP, SAMUEL JOHN 1778 – 1863
Born, probably in America, in 1778. Studied at the R.A. Schools, 1796, aged 18. Worked in London & Brighton (August 1809). Exhibited at the R.A. (170), Associated Artists, B.I. (55) 1805-49, O.W.C.S. and S.B.A., 1802 – 1849. Painted miniatures, watercolour portraits, landscapes (including Italian & Swiss views), a few oil portraits, and executed engravings.
He enjoyed an excellent reputation and painted many sitters from theatrical circles. Was a member of the Sketching Society & an old list of members of the Society calls him ‘The American Stump’. He was a prolific artist often signing S.J. Stump Pinxit/No 7 Cork Street/Burlington Gardens/1816 Stump/Miniature Painter.
