A fine portrait miniature of Sir William Loraine, 4th Baronet (1749-1809). He is wearing a brown jacket with a black collar, a cream waistcoat and a white frilled chemise. His curly hair is powdered. Watercolour on ivory in the original gold frame with blue glass reverse and plaited hair within a glass aperture.

Additional Information: Sir William Loraine lived in Newcastle on Tyne at Kirkharle Hall. He married Frances Campart, and had one daughter, Frances Vere Loraine. The Baronetcy of Loraine of Kirkharle was created for Thomas Loraine September 26th 1664. The Northumbrian estate at Kirkharle Hall was acquired on the marriage of William Loraine to the Strother heiress of Kirkharle early in the 15th century. The Loraines could trace their ancestry back to Robert de Loraine a Norman knight who arrived with William the Conqueror. Provenance: Private collection.
